A Day for Sketching Flowers

Today has been such a productive day! Sketching these beautiful flowers in a range of mediums such as watercolour, tea and graphite has been a rather freeing exercise. Each flower has been labelled with it’s origin and meaning.

Fuscia – confiding love and taste
Freesia – innocence and trust
Carnation – fascination and devoted love
Dog Rose – pleasure or pain
Foxglove – youth
Rose bud – beauty and youth

Keep love in your heart. A life without it is like a sunless garden where the flowers are dead

Oscar Wilde

And the heart that is soonest awake to the flowers is always the first to be touch’d by the thorns

Thomas Moore

Deep in their roots, all flowers keep the light

Theodore Roethke

The flowers anew, returning seasons bring; but beauty faded has no second spring

Ambrose Phillips
